PEACH SPRINGS – Early this evening a 50-acre fire was reported near the Music Mountain High School on the west side of Peach Springs.
According to an officer with the Hualapai Police Department, the fire had jumped from the southside of Route 66 to the north side of the road. The fire had grown to nearly 300 acres. Winds were blowing the fire to the north while crews worked to get the blaze under control.
The Arizona Department of Transportation and local police had stopped traffic on Route 66 for about an hour before they allowed motorists to travel safely through.
As of 7:30 p.m., fire crews were still working on extinguishing the fire.
