KINGMAN — Memorial Day started off cool in the Hualapai Mountains.
The temperature was a chilly 38 degrees at 10 a.m., but that didn’t stop Hilltop Foursquare Church from having a Memorial Day Picnic.
Pastor Norm Taylor decided to build a fire in the recreation area to keep the people warm.
The morning began with breakfast burritos and doughnuts. Food lined the tables of the venue, and the people honored fallen soldiers and participated in a time of fellowship.
Brian Besser and his son Levi Besser visited Kingman to play music for the event. They sang old-time hymns like “How Great Thou Art” and “I’ll Fly Away.”
“We are here to honor our fallen soldiers,” said Besser.
“It’s a day of remembrance.”
Taylor said the picnic and service were two-fold. He said the first reason for the gathering was to observe Memorial Day. He also said the fellowship aspect was important. He explained that the church has two different services and sometimes the attendees don’t get a chance to meet one another.
“We want to honor all the people who gave their lives so we can have religious freedom,” said Taylor.
