LAKE HAVASU CITY — A California man was arrested for operating a watercraft under the influence of alcohol with children on board.
Mohave County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Darwin Amaya, 36, from Bellflower, California, for two counts of felony aggravated operating a watercraft while under the influence, with children on board.
Division of Boating Safety deputies were patrolling near Thompson Bay on May 25 when they observed a personal watercraft traveling at a high speed and weaving through boat traffic in a posted No Wake Zone.
Deputies stopped the watercraft and identified the driver as Amaya. He reportedly had two children on board.
MCSO said Amaya almost struck the patrol vessel during the stop. It forced deputies to swerve and maneuver to avoid a collision.
Deputies said they noticed that Amaya’s eyes were red and watery and reported they could smell an odor of an intoxicating substance.
Amaya was detained and transported to Contact Point, where deputies performed a breath test. According to MCSO, the resulting blood alcohol content was .122 percent.
Amaya was arrested and booked into the Mohave County Adult Detention Facility without incident.
The minor children were returned to their mother.
