KINGMAN — An inmate from the Mohave County Adult Detention Facility reportedly assaulted a detention officer and attempted to escape during routine transport from a court hearing.
Steven Ray Wilkinson, 39, of Bullhead City, has been charged with aggravated assault on a correctional employee and escape in the first degree, both felonies.
Mohave County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded about 5:40 p.m. April 29 to the Mohave County Adult Detention Facility about an assault on a correctional officer. The attack took place at the Mohave County Superior Courthouse.
Deputies learned that Wilkinson had allegedly attacked the detention officer after leaving the courthouse. The correctional officer said he was walking Wilkinson and another inmate to the jail transport van after court. MCSO said the officer was removing his keys from his belt when Wilkinson lunged towards him and tried to take his keys.
MCSO said the officer tried to secure his keys and Wilkinson lunged again and shoved him against the vehicle. A struggle ensued and the detention officer tried to put Wilkinson on the ground.
The officer deployed his Oleoresin Capsicum spray. The second inmate assisted the officer in keeping Wilkinson on the ground until courthouse security staff arrived. Wilkinson was restrained during the incident and the detention officer was not injured.
Wilkinson was charged with the above mentioned charges and transported back to the Mohave County Adult Detention Facility without further incident.
