MOHAVE VALLEY – The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office has learned the identity of a human skull found in the desert.
The remains were discovered March 15, 2018, by a hiker in the area of Highway 66 about milepost 22. They were sent to the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification (UNTCHI), which analyzed them for DNA. UNTCHI notified the sheriff’s office of a match based on the DNA profile.
The remains were identified as belonging to Ilaisa V. Vaitai, a 68-year-old male who was reported missing out of Ontario, Calif., in May of 2017. Mohave County Sheriff’s detectives contacted the Ontario Police Department so next-of-kin notification could be made.
No foul play is suspected in the death of Vaitai.
