“Mangy Mutt” Dog-Friendly Run/Walk A Great Reason to Get Outside

KINGMAN – Get the dogs fed early.

The 5th Annual Mangy Mutt 5K Desert Walk/Run and Kids 1K Fun Run kicks off at 8 a.m. tomorrow at the Kingman Regional Medical Center Hualapai Mountain Campus, 3601 Santa Rosa Dr.

Dogs are more than welcome, since the event is raising money for the Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic’s Low Cost Spay/Neuter Foundation. That foundation funds spay and neuter efforts and veterinary services for pets in low-income family households in the Kingman area.

As of 5 p.m. Friday, the clinic was getting packed with some of the nearly 100 race/walk participants who have already signed up.

“We’re going to be out there rain or shine,” said volunteer coordinator Billie Tedesco, who was getting racers/walkers signed up to hopefully win some of the nearly $2,200 in prizes.

The forecast for Saturday morning includes a very slight chance of rain and chilly 40-degree temperatures.

Other volunteers, including race director Chris Brady and Low Cost veterinarian Dr. Taylor Williams, were helping participants pick up their race packets until 8 p.m. Friday.

According to Williams, the clinic spays and neuters about 8,000 dogs and cats each year, with half of those animals coming from a low-income family.

Low Cost marketing manager and non-prof coordinator Kristin Freiert said fundraising efforts are definitely working.

“We had a goal of $11,000 for this race,” she said. “It has been overwhelming this year – in a good way.”

Over the last six years, the money-raising efforts of Mangy Mutt sponsors and race participants have prevented more than 40,000 dogs and cats from making more dogs and cats.

Pet owners can work with Low Cost to get assistance for pet owners.

“We have a lot of options to help with the pets,” Freiert said.

Of course, donations are always encouraged.

The race starts at 8 a.m., but last-minute sign-ups begin at 7 a.m. at the KRMC Hualapai Mountain Campus.
